Betty White, Washington DC: Star Heads To Capitol To Talk Passion For Animals At Smithsonian & National Zoo

May 16th, 2012

WASHINGTON — Betty White is headed to Washington to see the wildlife – not the donkeys and elephants on Capitol Hill, but the animals in the National Zoo.

After a stop at the Smithsonian on Thursday, White will visit the zoo one day later to indulge her passion: animal watching. She’s looking forward to viewing the fertility-challenged pandas and a harmonica-playing elephant, among other animals.

“My interest in animals started in the womb,” the 90-year-old actress told The Associated Press. “I think my mother’s and father’s started in the same place. They were animal nuts long before I came along.”

When White was young, her family had pet Pekingese – an “unappreciated little toy dog” that is incredibly intelligent, she said.

During the Depression, her father starting building radios to make some extra money. But most people couldn’t afford to buy radios, she said, so her father would trade them – usually for more dogs. At one point, they wound up with 11 dogs in the house.

“Now the radios didn’t eat, but the dogs did,” White said. “It was not really his best business venture.”

Even at 90, White continues to keep a busy schedule. Her NBC show “Off Their Rockers” about seniors playing pranks on young people was just renewed for another season. She also has a TV Land sitcom, “Hot in Cleveland.”

White lives in Brentwood, Calif., with her golden retriever named Pontiac, who used to be a guide dog.

“I like to think of it as the Indian chief and not the car,” she said of her pet’s namesake. “As a matter of fact, when the car company went out of business, I sat him down and I said, `Oh Pontiac, it wasn’t anything you did, sweetie.’”

In Washington, White will visit a sold-out crowd Thursday at the Smithsonian Associates, an educational division of the museum complex. And she will sign copies of her book, “Betty and Friends: My Life at the Zoo.”

It’s a mostly picture book compiled over the years with facts about animals. Since 1974, White has served as a trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. So she gives readers a tour of animals at the Los Angeles Zoo and many other leading zoos across the country.

She closes her book with parting shots of a giraffe’s behind, followed by a bear’s behind.

When White has a chance to visit a zoo, she said she likes to stay for a long time and watch the animals relax. She wrote her book to let people know about all the good zoos do.

“So many people say, `Oh, I hate zoos. I want all the animals to be back in their natural habitat,’” she said. “Well, you know what we’ve done to their natural habitat.

“Without zoos, we would have lost already so many species.”

White says she’s fascinated by nearly every creature, even snakes, and has a hard time naming favorites. She does love elephants, bears and poodles, though, to name a few.

On Friday, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo will roll out the red carpet to give White a look at their research efforts behind the scenes. She will also sign copies of her book.

Zookeepers plan to show her the Asian elephants up close, including Shanthi who plays harmonica with her trunk, as well as the popular pandas, the great apes and the Panamanian golden frog. The zoo is leading an effort to fight a fast-spreading fungus blamed for wiping out dozens of amphibian species.

Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said the scientists and animal keepers are excited to host White.

“It’s very personal for us because she’s beloved by millions,” she said. “For my colleagues to know that someone who actually cares about them and cares about their work conserving species is coming here … We’re really honored, quite frankly.”

The Aging Network's Volunteer Collaborative Is Launched to Fill Expanding Gap Between Critical Social Needs and …

May 16th, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwire -05/16/12)-
To support the growing population of elderly and disabled Americans, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and its partners today announced an initiative to increase the number of older adult volunteers to one million by 2015. The Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative is a comprehensive on-line resource center to help leaders in the aging and disability networks engage 55+ adult volunteers to expand and improve services.

In Washington, DC today, representatives from the Administration on Aging and new Administration for Community Living, the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities (NASUAD), the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging, Inc. explained how the changing characteristics of today’s volunteers, and their mushrooming numbers, creates an unprecedented opportunity to mobilize healthy older adults to help their peers struggling to get needed services.

“Volunteers have always been a critical part of how we provide supportive services to older people and their caregivers,” said Edwin Walker, the Deputy Assistant Secretary, Administration on Aging, Administration for Community Living. “Today we have the largest and most capable group of healthy adults turning 65, and we need them more than ever as volunteers, as the population of older persons needing assistance continues to grow. The Volunteer Collaborative will be the vehicle that fosters, supports, and modernizes volunteerism in the aging and disability networks,” he said.

The Volunteer Collaborative is a virtual meeting place for Aging Network professionals to come together and is designed to stimulate and support volunteer development through sharing successes, webinars, discussion forums and developing policy. It provides the tools the network members and community service providers need to successfully and efficiently engage today’s older adults in the right way to increase the capacity of organizations providing services and to meet the increasing demand for critical services.

“The 55+ population represents a transformational social force for organizations and communities,” said Sandy Markwood, CEO, n4a. “To realize this transformation, we need to re-think and reframe what we know about volunteering and find new ways to engage older adults in more professional and leadership volunteer roles to increase the capacity of non-profit organizations. At the same time, we need to bring those in need of service to the table and empower them to advocate for what is needed to remain independent with choices and the ability to maintain a life with dignity and purpose. The Volunteer Collaborative gives the Aging Network members a resource from which they can learn best practices and find ways to implement new processes that in the long run will result in the additional support they and their communities require.”

NASUAD supports states to meet the service needs of older adults and persons with disabilities. “With the economic downturn and its impact on states, we realize that we must expand our thinking about resources,” said Martha Roherty, Executive Director of NASUAD.

“NASUAD members get it. We get the importance of developing the national human resource asset that older adults now represent. We get that it will take all of us to fulfill our national commitment and promise to enable those with disabilities and those late in life to have meaning, dignity, choice, and purpose until the end of life. It is critical that the state aging and service networks learn to work together so we can align our initiatives to maximize the people power that the growing number of older adults represent,” she said.

The Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative can be accessed at www.AgingNetworkVolunteerCollaborative.org.

About The Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative
The Volunteer Collaborative is an on-line resource to assist the Aging Network in engaging and empowering older adults and maximizing their leadership skills and experiences. It is funded by the Administration on Aging and led by National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) in partnership with AARP, the AARP Foundation, the Center for Certification of Volunteer Administrators, the Corporation of National and Community Service and the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities (NASUAD).

Realtors(R) Ready to Drive Real Estate Issues Home in Nation's Capital

May 14th, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwire -05/14/12)-
Realtors® from across the country are meeting with legislators, public policy makers and industry leaders this week to address pressing concerns and issues that affect homeowners, aspiring homeowners and real estate investors everywhere as the Realtors® Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo begins.

“As leading advocates for homeownership, housing issues and private property rights, Realtors® come to Washington this week ready to engage on a number of pressing issues,” said National Association of Realtors® President Moe Veissi, broker-owner of Veissi & Associates Inc., in Miami. “Both residential and commercial real estate play important roles in our families, our communities, and our nation’s economy, and Realtors® want to ensure a bright future for our industry and our country.”

More than 9,000 Realtors® and guests are expected to attend the meetings, which run here through May 19. During the week, Realtors® will meet with legislators on Capitol Hill to urge action toward ensuring access to affordable financing, streamlining short sales, engaging in comprehensive secondary mortgage market reform, bolstering liquidity in the commercial and multifamily real estate market, and preserving the tax benefits associated with homeownership.

In addition, Realtors® are urging members of Congress to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program, which is currently set to expire on May 31. Millions of American taxpayers rely on the NFIP for flood protection, and NAR estimates that if the current extension is allowed to expire, 1,300 home sales will be at risk every day that the program is not in place.

Realtors® will also participate in sessions with a number of government officials and industry experts, including representatives from the Federal Housing Administration, Federal Housing Finance Agency, Federal Reserve Board, Mortgage Bankers Association of America, National Economic Council, and the U.S. Treasury.

One of the highlights of this year’s meeting will be a Rally to Protect the American Dream on Thursday, May 17. Approximately 10,000 Realtors® are expected to convene on the grounds of the Washington Monument from 9:30-11 a.m. to highlight the important role housing plays in the economic recovery. Many Realtors® will travel by bus from as far away as Florida, Maine, and North Dakota just to participate in the event.

“We need to keep housing and real estate first on the nation’s public policy agenda, because these issues affect all Americans,” said Veissi. “Realtors® are committed to working with members of Congress, regulators and industry leaders to ensure public policies and industry practices that promote responsible, sustainable homeownership and encourage real estate investment. We want to make sure that our country’s leaders, now and into the future, understand the vital role that real estate plays in both the long- and short-term health of this nation.”

Galaxy to be honored at White House

May 12th, 2012
May 11, 2012 – Major League Soccer (MLS) Los Angeles Galaxy

WASHINGTON, DC “” On Tuesday, May 15, President Obama will welcome Major League Soccer champions, the LA Galaxy to the White House to honor their 2011 season and their MLS Cup victory. This visit will also continue the tradition begun by President Obama of honoring sports teams for their efforts to give back to communities as part of their trip to Washington.

Following the ceremony, LA Galaxy players will join the First Lady to hold a Let’s Move! soccer clinic on the South Lawn for students from across the country. The children participating come from the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success programs in DC, Houston and Miami and America SCORES programs in DC, St. Louis and Denver. Earlier this year, the White House honored a member from both organizations as a Let’s Move! Champion of Change. The children will also have the chance to watch the ceremony.

The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, runs the national after-school program Soccer for Success. Soccer for Success provides children in urban underserved areas with structured physical activity, nutrition education and mentorship, for 90 minutes a day, three times per week for 24 weeks per year, at no cost to their families. Soccer for Success ensures that children in under-resourced communities have easy and affordable access to a high quality out-of-school program that supports their physical and personal development. The children participating in the event are from Miami, FL, Houston, TX and Washington, DC where the U.S. Soccer Foundation partners with the YMCA of Greater Miami, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and United for D.C. respectively to implement the program in those cities.

America SCORES provides innovative afterschool and summer programming which combine soccer, poetry and spoken word, and service-learning every day for over 24 weeks each year. America SCORES participants receive ten times more exercise than the national average and lower their BMI by 2% by the end of each season. Using soccer as a tool to encourage fitness, sportsmanship, and leadership, America SCORES inspires the life-long appreciation of sports and health-enhancing behaviors like choosing to eat more fruit and vegetables, participating in organized sports and spending less time watching television and playing video games. Each year, America SCORES serves 7,500 students at 150 schools through fourteen affiliates located in major urban centers across the United States. Founded in 1994 in Washington DC, America SCORES grew to a national organization and expanded to Denver in 1999, and again to St. Louis in 2005. Today, DC SCORES serves over 800 low-income DC youth at 27 schools; America SCORES Denver serves 320 youth at ten West Denver DPS schools; America SCORES St. Louis serves 260 youth at seven schools.
